The Wizard of Oz is perhaps the most famous work for which the names Harold Arlen and Yip Harburg are known. After the success of Hooray for What?, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer began considering hiring the duo to do a special project. They had been considering Jerome Kern as a possible composer for their new musical, but instead contracted Arlen and Harburg for the childhood classic The Wizard of Oz. The two songwriters, they felt, had a special talent for the fantastic, and might be able to provide just the right musical feeling for the film. From their experience working on other film musicals, Harburg and Arlen had learned how to integrate the songs, instrumentals, and choral numbers into the drama to enhance the characterizations and plot. They first worked on all the lighter pieces, including 'The Merry Old Land of Oz,' 'Ding-Dong!,' and 'We're Off to See the Wizard.' They had finished more than half a dozen songs when Harburg suddenly decided that a serious ballad was needed to balance the overall light, playful musical style, and Arlen went to work composing a melody. What he wrote eventually became 'Somewhere Over the Rainbow.' Throughout her life, Judy Garland, the star of The Wizard of Oz, felt that 'Somewhere Over the Rainbow' was the closest song to her heart and thought that it was for many other people, too. A beautiful ballad about hopes and dreams, it has an arching melody filled with just that element of fantasy Arthur Freed and the producers had been looking for. But the producers at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer threw it out time and again. After each film preview, it was scratched, and Arlen, Harburg, and associate producer Arthur Freed had to argue vehemently for its inclusion. When the film was finally released in 1939, the song received an Oscar. The scenes in Kansas were filmed in sepia print and the scenes in Munchkinland were in Technicolor, an entirely new medium that brought with it an element of romance to the story. The costumes and makeup were exquisitely done and Dorothy's companions were elaborate creations. And special effects created a life-like tornado, a fearsome Wizard, a storm of flying monkeys, and much more. Although originally conceived of as a children's film, The Wizard of Oz has since become a classic of the American cinema and its songs have stood the test of time over and over again.
