A beautiful ballad about hopes and dreams, it has an arching melody filled with just that element of fantasy Arthur Freed and the producers had been looking for. But the producers at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer threw it out time and again. After each film preview, it was scratched, and Arlen, Harburg, and associate producer Arthur Freed had to argue vehemently for its inclusion. When the film was finally released in 1939, the song received an Oscar. The scenes in Kansas were filmed in sepia print and the scenes in Munchkinland were in Technicolor, an entirely new medium that brought with it an element of romance to the story.
